Denmark - the land of my fathers

We left Stockholm with heavy hearts - saying goodbye to our new friends and the city by which I will compare all other European cities (so far, none have quite lived up). The next stop on our agenda was Amsterdam, by way of Copenhagen. When we got to Copenhagen we decided to stay and ended up there two nights.

After the first night we rented bicycles and set out to explore the city. We visited an old military Fortification called Kastellet. It's a man made island shaped like a star with steep hills on all sides. We saw some military walking around but the area seems to be mostly a park. It's interesting that such a peaceful and beautiful place was built for the express purpose of war.

My great great grandfather lived here in Copenhagen And sailed away to America at the age of 14 to join his two older sisters and brother in Utah. I saw a lot of statues around that I assume are all of him. It's a great city, but after a few days I can see why he was so eager to leave.

After Kastellet we were riding around and saw a couple sitting in their van eating lunch. We stopped to say hi and met Matias and Maren who were visiting fro Hamburg. They are in month four (!) of their European tour and had just come from Norway. They were doing laundry across the street from where they were parked - Stu had to do some laundry too, so he put his laundry in and we joined them for coffee.

We ended up hanging out with them for several hours and hearing all about their adventures. Matias suggested we visit Christiana, a "city within the city." We parted ways and headed towards Christiana, what came to be perhaps the most interesting and unique place I have ever been. It was so great that is deserves its own blog post, which will be coming soon. Stay tuned...
